Microwavable Rice Pack

rice-pack

It’s bloody freezing right now, and I’m forcing myself to go outside and walk to the gym. It’s sheer madness I know.  It has forced my hand though to get on and make some microwavable rice pack because it’s cold and I’m aching.

I bought a fat quarter of fabric for £2.85, and a 500g bag of rice for 88p.  I already had a little bottle of what I thought was lavender essential oil but was actually lavender massage oil.

I cut the fat quarter into a piece that was 32 x 58 cm (I just eyeballed the size I wanted).

I folded it in half longways right side together.  Then I sewed closed two sides, and about a third of the way along the third side.

I turned it inside out, so right way out really.  Then poured in the rice, and a few drops of the lavender.  Then I hand sewed the open side using my terrible version of slip stitch.  I was worried that my hand sewing wouldn’t be strong enough and rice would explode everywhere but so far so good.

I put mine in the microwave for two mins and it came out very hot, so I think 1min 30secs might be better.  I did notice it didn’t keep it heat as long as a hot water bottle, although if you spend four hours trying to pose with it and take pictures for your blog then what do you expect?

How To Make Healthy Cereal Bars

I like eating, and snacking, and am simultaneously failing to lose weight. For some reason…

The cereal/energy bars in the supermarket are rarely as healthy as you think, especially when you look at how much sugar is in them.  I, nerdily, looked at the nutritional values of 23 cereal bars and tried to find ones with less than 150 calories, 5g fat, and 6g sugar, and more than 3g protein, and 3g fibre.

Avocado Face Mask

Why eat vegetables when you can just smear them on your face…

  • ½ avocado
  • ¼ cup uncooked oatmeal
  • 2 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Avocado has lots of vitamin E which mosturises skins, the citric acid in the lemon juice brightens skin and reduces inflamation, honey is antibacterial, and the oatmeal is a mild exfolient.

Well anyway, I just mixed all the ingredients and smeared away.  It’s not exactly a smooth mask, I think a riper avocado would have helped.

My skin did feel quite smooth afterwards but I think I prefer the olive oil mask I made a while ago.

How To Make Banana Oat Muffins

I found this recipe for a Banana Oat Muffin and decided to give it a try as a healthy snack or quick breakfast.  I would have omitted the protein powder because I don’t use it and it’s quite expensive for a one off recipe.

I also would have missed out the applesauce because where on earth do you buy that in the UK?  So I did a bit more searching and figured out my own recipe:

  • 190g oatmeal
  • 2 bananas
  • 2tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 180ml milk
  • 225g honey
  • 2 eggs
  • 2tbsp oil

muffinsIt’s healthier than normal muffins because there’s no flour or gluten, and no added sugar it just relies on the honey and banana for sweetness.  It’s nonsense to say there isn’t sugar in it though as honey is 80% sugar and there’s about 12g per 100g in a banana.

Anyway, you just mix the dry ingredients together, then slowly add the wet ones.  Mix it all up and dollop into muffin cases.  I made 12 muffins with that much mixture.

I then baked it at 450 F/ 230 C.  It should have taken about 15mins, I think they were in there for about 45mins!

They tasted ok, quite bananay- duh!  And they didn’t rise very much.  Chocolate chips would have improved them but made them less healthy.  The eternal dilemma!

Almond Milk

Almond milk is a hip alternative to cows milk- good if you’re vegan or lactose intolerant.  And you can make it yourself.

Almond Milk

Almond MilkSimply get some whole almonds and soak them overnight.  They will soak up the water and swell a little.  Then drain and rinse, and put in a blender with more water (obviously the more water you use the thinner it will be, I had to add more water half-way through to make it more milk like). Blend, blend, blend. Then sieve.  I just used a regular sieve but you could add cheese-cloth to get all the almond bits out.Almond Milk

Then drink.  Easy to make.  Shame it taste so horrible!  It was fine on my porridge though but…my almonds cost me about £1.30 for 100g, it made about 250ml of milk.  Almond milk costs about £1.50 to £1.80 for 1L. If I bought larger quantities of almonds it would be cheaper but I still think it is actually more cost effective to just buy the milk.  Cows milk is about 80p for 1L so I think I’ll be sticking to that.

How To Make Christmas Crackers

You can get sets to make Christmas crackers but it’s actually pretty easy to make your own anyway.   This is what you need:

  • Cracker snaps (I bought them from Hobbycraft for 79p for 12)
  • Toilet toll tubes (Just hang around outside cubicles in public toilets waiting for people to finish)
  • Pretty paper (like wrapping paper)
  • Pretty ribbon
  • Elastic bands (2 for each cracker)
  • Tape or glue
  • Perforated rotary cutter (I bought a little one for a few pound but you could also use scissors)

And here is what you do:

Crackers

  1. Cut your paper to at least 28 x 15 cm and use the perforated rotary cutter to perforate across the paper around 5 cm in.  FYI this is how crackers work- you may have thought you were super strong last Christmas when you won all the cracker toys but really you just got lucky and pulled the perforated end,
  2. Place tube in the centre of the paper and insert the cracker snap through the tube.
  3. Tape or glue the ends of the cracker snap to the paper.
  4. Wrap the paper around the tube and tape or glue in place.
  5. Carefully place the elastic bands around the paper at the end of the tube, tie the ribbon around the elastic bands.   And done!
